What is an Income Statement?

What is an income statement? The income statement is one of the three financial statements used in accounting. The other two statements are the balance sheet and the cash flow statement. All are used regularly in fundamental analysis.

The purpose of the income statement is to show a company’s profit and loss for the period. They are more commonly shared for the profit and loss over a quarter or the fiscal year.

The details and line items on the income statement can be very different depending on the complexity and size of the company. However, regular items are found on the income statement, such as revenue, costs, gross profit, expenses, taxes paid, interest and finishing with net income.
